How to walk into a room where you know nobody

Coming alone is the point of Me with Unknown Friends, not a problem to solve. What the evening looks like, and how to get the most from it.

Makutano Afrika editorial

Most social events quietly assume you arrive with someone. Me with Unknown Friends assumes the opposite: you come on your own, and the evening is designed around that.

The format leans on icebreakers, games and conversation activities rather than small talk, with music, food and drinks carrying the room between them. There is usually a surprise activity in the mix, and some sessions include swimming, so it is worth checking what is on before you go.

A few things help. Arrive near the start, when everyone is meeting for the first time — the opening half hour is the easiest place to join. Bring one question you genuinely like asking; it does more work than a rehearsed introduction. And swap contacts with one person before you leave, rather than collecting five you will never message.

The experience runs weekly. Standard and premium entry are both set out on the event page, with everything included listed alongside. The honest version of why it works: it is a room of people who also came alone.
